Help, 231 for 249 transfer case

I am fairly new to Jeeps and I got some great replys to the question of what is wrong with my transfercase, but I have one more. Can I replace my 249 with a 231? I have one handy and free so that is why I ask. Please help.

the answer is a conditional yes. some zj's had front driveshafts with a cv joint at the tc, you would need a new front shaft(or just a new end put on it) and very likely lengthening of the rear shaft as well.

but the swap it's self is failry straight forward following the instructions for a 242 swap. you'll likely need to swap the input from the 249 to the 231 unless you get really lucky and both are the same length.

the 231 tc case is shorter so you will need to lengthen your drive shaft! 242' are the same size.. but you need to get the same kind of tail shaft as the one you have!

I had to shorten my driveshaft by about an inch.

When you swap input shafts, make sure the gear cut is the same. Here this is copied over from Jordan on MC, should give you a better idea on input shaft lengths.

ZJ 93-93.3 4.0L aw4 = short
ZJ 93-95 4.0L = medium with internal collar
ZJ 96-98 4.0L = medium without internal collar
ZJ 93-95 v8 = long
ZJ 96-98 v8 (both) = medium without internal collar
short = .750" exposed
medium = .840" exposed
long = 1.55" exposed

lengthen/shorten.. you will still need to address it cause the two units are not the same physical size. ( I just knew one of them was longer than the other)
