guys i think i fried my engine

Well guys i think i fried my engine. i was towing my grandpas small utility trailer this morning because i had to take a dead fridge to the scrapyard. on the way back to drop off the trailer, it started running a little hot. i knew the gauge was off by a bit, so i didnt think anything of it. then it got really hot. so hot that it started pinging. i pulled over and let it cool off. then i kept going and it started doing it again. this time when i pulled over, there was smoke coming out from under the hood. it wouldnt crank over, actually died going down the freeway and i coasted it to the side. it was pissing water out from the drivers side of the radiator, i think it got so hot that it either caused the tank to separate or actually cracked the tank. dumped some water in it and it leaked it right back out. let it cool a bit, got it fired (missing bad at this point) and limped it off the freeway and into a lowes parking lot. got it towed back to my house (luckily my grandpa has AAA and towing was free). pulled the plugs and they all looked normal. checked the compression and cylinders 1 and 3 both had only 80 psi. 5 had 100, 7 had 145. 2, 4, and 6 were around 100, and 8 had 150.

time for a 5.9 swap.

im pulling the heads tomorrow, so the story will be told then.

Still worth a little more investigation work. Depending on what you find you could get out of this with just a head gasket set and a trip to the machine shop.

Of course if you are looking for a good reason to swap in a 5.9 this is a pretty good one.

Do the cheap stuff first
Make sure its not something dumb like a thermostat: no point pulling heads bud. If u cooked the motor its done. Make sure the easy stuf is good like tstat, rad etc

dnuccio 07-20-2013 10:46 PM

thermostat alone wouldnt cause a misfire under any circumstances. its missing on at least 2 cylinders if not more.

None of that would cause the low compression either. Those compression numbers are not a good sign. Bent pushrod, stuck valve, bad head gasket, cracked head. The cooling issue will need to get sorted out but I'd be cracking open the engine to have a look at least.

motor will come apart tomorrow. will post results and pictures here

my build sheet shows heavy duty cooling. did that have a bigger/different radiator?

For some reason , Chrysler thinks HD cooling can be obtained from a rinky-dink little trans cooler

Those comp. numbers are a sign of a rebuild it or replace it . No way a gasket will fix those .

A blown head gasket or cracked/warped head can be the cause of those low compression readings, and based on the symptoms he described, I'm going with that. What do I get if I win?

Wet and dry compression test numbers would confirm that better but what are the odds of gaskets failing or cracking the heads in 2 places per side ? Warping is more logical but if you did that much damage , that would be just the beginning .

IMO , find a good 2nd hand engine and be much happier

In my experience when an engine overheats the head gaskets will blow before the short block suffers any damage. If it gets hot enough to warp one head and you keep driving it it will warp the other. I still say it's worth it to pop the heads off and check it out. A machine shop can tell you if the heads are warped beyond where they can safely be resurfaced. A mechanics straightedge and feeler gauges can tell you if the block is flat.

I learned this lesson the hard way. My sisters engine overheated when the water pump fell apart. I put a new head gasket in it and it ran badly. I ran a compression check and got irregular numbers. Ended up putting a junkyard head on it to replace the warped original. Ran fine after that.

On the other hand, the local junkyard will sell a long block for $250.

thats probably the plan. i have a buddy whose dad works for an auto dismantler and he can probably get me a good price on a somewhat low mileage 5.9 to put in it.

well i have the story, and at this point theres no happy ending. motor is fried. cylinders are glazed and have burnt spots. if it didnt burn oil before, it will now. driver side head gasket was blown between 1 and 3. passenger side head is warped a couple thousands.

heres pictures from start to finish

also at this point, i dont think im going to put a 5.9 in it. i really just need to keep it going a couple more years before i can get something newer. my buddies dad can probably get me a 5.2 for next to nothing
