It could still grind if the rear bearing in the T case is bad.

If it had a tag saying it needed friction modifier, I'd venture to say it has a limited slip. I doubt any PO would just put that tag on there. If the tires spin opposite directions, the clutch packs are worn out. Whether or not that's causing your noise is a different story.

Would the clutch packs beying bad cause the drive train any binding and damage anything. It has around 230,000 miles on it and as far as I know I'm the only owner that has gotten into the front and rear end. I got it 3 almost 4 years ago and it had I think 160,000 miles on it maybe 180,000 but I don't Rember. I was checking if there was any movement in the u-joints and that's when I found that there was play in the transfer case to the front drive line. I've all ready got a list of things to fix on it but can only do the most important ones first it's my daily driver.
