grinding noise during acceleration

My parents started having a problem with their Jeep a few months ago. While accelerating there is a grinding noise that happens right around 45mph. There is no noise before that or after you get past 45mph. I have not been in the vehicle while it happens so I don't have first hand knowloedge they only described it as a grinding noise though they said was really loud and can be accompanied by a bang as well.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

The vehicle is a 93 Grand Cherokee Limited (5.2L), Auto Tranny.

*edit

The grinding noise is coming from under the vehicle.

I had a similar noise in my Silverado. It was the front wheel bearing and CV joint.

I was able to road test the Jeep today. It doesn't matter what speed the Jeep is going there is a ticking/grinding noise coming from under the vehicle when you accelerate quickly in any gear. If I take it real easy I don't hear the noise but if I get on the pedal at all I hear it. The noise is coming from the middle/ front of the vehicle.

I also hear the noise if I have the Jeep sitting still and put the transfer case in neutral and the tranny in neutral.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Are you sure its coming from under the Jeep and not from the engine? If the tranny and tcase are both in N at idle it seems like the sound is most likely coming from the engine.

I'm not 100% but its weird that it doesnt make that noise if the Jeep is in park, and has all wheel drive engaged.

not sure if this helps any, but my catalytic converter is going, and before i diagnosed it as that, i thought the transmission was screwed up, mines did make a grinding noise (like a rattle..grind..rattle...grind) around 40-55 mph, and would go away around cruising speed 60mph.. but mines isn't followed by a bang.. i'll make a video if it helps when i get the chance this week.

Same here;

I have exactly the same problem .. When I start from the stop, I hear a "kick" and after that, ONLY when starting on hills, I hear chirping sound from somewhere under my jeep.. .
It can be heard only when pressing accel. pedal on hills going upwards, never downwards..

What could that be? It's a 1995 YJ, TF999 auto and 4.0L HO engine..

Here's a video of the sound:

U joint could be shot. 45mph could be the point where the frequency of the bad u joint meets the natural frequency of the vehicle causing the grinding. Of course you would be feeling it too. Not just hearing it.
