I hate the sound of the case grinding . I always get on a slight incline , shut the jeep off , switch gears , and go again . No strain on the linkage , no grinding of gears

What does shutting it off do that neutral doesn't? ;-)

That's not right, it should grind horribly trying to shift it in drive.

Its always been like that. My buddys jeep is the same way too. Either way its nice to be able to switch on the fly if i need to

the mechanics of how gear reduction works in these cases say you shouldn't be able to shift into low at all while still in drive.
