grinding binding squeeling noise around turns
hey guys my parents have a 04 grand cherokee limited v8 w/ quadra drive and about 40k miles on it
they said it binds up and squeels around heavy turns and a slight grinding, i also notice that i have to give it more gas too. sounds like something wrong in the transfer case, car is still under powertrain warrenty and still under the 90 day warrenty as well from when they purchaced it at a certified used jeep dealer just want to know if its normal mine jeep does screach or squeel a little around heavy turns but not as harsh as the 04

Do figure 8s in a parking lot if it is binding, popping, or squealing your TC needs help, start with an oil change and only use the DC fluid for the quadra drive, not ATF+4 or anything else get the stuff for a quadradrive that the dealer sells. If that does not fix it then the clutches are shot in the TC and need replaced, should be covered under warranty. If it is a Quadradrive, I would also do an entire 4wd service on it for good measure, get the TC and the diffs at the same time done.

Last year my 247 started to bind on tight turns, so I changed the fluid as it had been quite a while. No more problems. As stated above the new fluid is for the 245-247-249 transfer cases. Use only that fluid, or if old containers, it will have only 247 on th label. The diffs, front and rear, require a limited slip additive with the QuadraDrive.
If it's under a warranty as I read it was just purchased, inquire about having it done at the dealership, but they may consider it a maintenance item and you may be charged. You can counter by indicating that it should have been noticed at time of inspection, and corrected at that time. If you change the T/C fluid yourself, maybe $25 for the 2 qts. of 247 fluid. |
