Grand cherokee transfer case swap

i have a '94 grand cherokee limited V-8,has the 249 NP fulltime case, its going bad,so i need to find out what year 231NP or 242NP will fit,if they even will?I know the grands had 231NP,242NP and 249 NP with 249 the only option with the V-8.tried to replaced a friends 6 cyl. with a 249 with a 249 out of a V-8 and the input shaft for the transfer case was longer on the V-8 case....couldnt find another good one so we cut the shaft to fit on that one,so my question is ...will the 6 cyl. 231 or 242 fit,or will the input shafts be too short, hope someone did this swap and can give me some advice......thanks!!!

I did the 231 swap. As far as I know the 242 and 249 input shafts are the same, so you could just change the input shaft from your 249 into the 242. I used a 231 from a TJ w/ 4.0, it bolted in and had the correct input shaft. I did have to change the front output yoke to one from an XJ so it would accomodate the double cardan u-joint. Also, the 231 won't work with the VIC, and you have some field engineering to do to make the linkage work.
