Going HP Dana 30 Shopping tommorow
Well its about that time that I ditch the stock LP Dana 30. I will be going to Pick N Pull tomorrow to grab a HP Dana 30 with 3.55 gears. What do I need to know? How can I quickly tell if it is a 3.55 gear ratio? What is the list of tools I should bring with me? Any tips? What models do NOT have the vacuum disconnects?

the tag should be bolted down by two of the diff cover bolts, it'll probably be hard to spot at first but it should be there. there will be a bunch of numbers but somewhere the should be a 3.73 or 3.55. If you're having trouble or you're still skeptical you can always 411 the closest Jeep dealer and give them the VIN and ask.
pop the diff cover and inspect. see how much metal is collected on the plug. If you can get it stripped down enough, you should be able to turn the yoke by hand with little effort. I'm not sure of the biggest size socket. Definitely the control arms though. Why don't use yours as a gauge, they've gotta be close if not the same.

if i remember correctly... the largest wrench you will need is a 21 and that would be for the LCA's.... i recomment taking a good socket-wrench set as well as some wrenches... ( socket on bolt head, wrench on nut so it doesnt spin)
you will also need some torx for the UCA's

and yes... the bolts on your LP30 will be the same so just go check your axle ... the Lower control arm will be the largest... it will be a different size for the nut than the bolt.. i beleive you need an 18mm and a 21 mm for the lower control arms but check to be sure

The only problems caused by this swap are: Driveshaft and caster issues.
I had the 249 when I bought my '96, and it had the CV at the diff. Changing diffs forced the CV to change lengths, and I guess it had kind of worn in after 320,000kms. It vibrated pretty bad, even though it was smooth after the 3" lift. IF you have a regular U-Joint front drive shaft, no problems. The ZJ adjusts caster on the diff end of the LCAs. The XJ adjusts caster on the frame end of the LCAs. My HP D30 swap (from a 1990 XJ) worked out fine with no adjustment, but I noticed while I was down there that the ZJ frame is actually set up for the XJ caster adjustment IF you elongate the LCA bolt hole in the frame (the way the XJ hole is from the factory). So, why not pick up the frame-end shims, and the u-shaped bracket for them, from the XJ that donates the front diff? You don't want wandering steering or death wobble!!! Now just as an aside, I like 2wd low range for slow traffic and tricky work with a heavy trailer. If you put in a vacuum disco HP D30 with manual control of the disco, it's kind of like having locking hubs, so you can arrange for 2wd Low Range. Also, a disco D30 allows you to run a locker on the front with no issues on the street. I don't have a disco diff right now, but when I put in the WJ conversion, I might go that route. The only hard part is finding the ABS YJ disco Pass Side axle, so you can run ABS, The Dr Side axles are all interchangeable... Something to think about when I should be working... |
