GDM to digital VIC on a ZJ laredo??? help?

hey guys. was reading some recent posts regarding swapping a boring laredo GDM for the digital VIC from a limited. found several in the local graveyard and was interested in making the swap. a few concerns/comments thought you all might be able to help me with....i wanted to write up detailed a how-to (with pics) for this swap if i can get all the details ironed out....

1) seems as if the digital VIC uses two wiring harnesses while the GDM uses one. i believe from what ive read that the laredo has the second harness tucked up behind the a/c controls and just needs to be plugged in. is this correct?

2) apparently the laredo doesnt have the coolant level sensor that the limited has. seems to be two ways around this.....1) jumpering the wires for this sensor or 2) buying the sensor and wiring it to the VIC harness. i know someone has jumpered the wires. if so, which wires did you jumper together? if anyone has added a coolant sensor, how did you do this?

3) does anyone have the connector diagrams for the VIC?

4) also read that someome who jumpered the wires then got a low coolant message possibly related to resistance across the jumpered wires. anyone know what kind of resistor to add to this circuit to bypass the low coolant message?


thanks guys i look forward to hearing your input on this one. i think it could be a cool swap (especially for those that dont have the overhead console).

Why do you want to put that piece of crap in your truck? Put something useful there like some gauges, a cb, or , storage cubby.

Because we like flourescent tube displays In my 98 I didn't have a gdm nor vic, just a cubby. I installed a LOM, a coolant bottle that accepted a sensor, a washer bottle that accepted a sensor, and ran some wires to get other functions. Since there is about 8 different wiring diagrams for esch section of the vic I doubt they will get posted. Best bet is to get a fsm which you will need eventually anyway which has the diagrams. Not extremely difficult to do but I ran matching wire to the diagrams so if a problem developed I could still use the diagrams to troubleshoot.

In my 98 I just had a cubby,no gdm no vic. I had to run some wire, install a LOM, install a coolant and washer bottle that would accept the sensors. I mean if your gonna do it, take full advantage of what it offers.

I already have all the necessary wires in my jeep. I believe the 93-95 gdm/vic has 1 harness and 96-98 has gdm/vic has 2 harnesses something like that not 100% sure but it could be switched.

You need all the sensors and other wiring in place. Then you gotta get lucky you don't get one with bad solder joints or other issues. Buy one for your year range: 93-95 or 96-98. It will probably end up being more work than it's worth if you ask me, but it's your jeep.

Other way round. The 93-95 VIC has 2 plugs, 96-98 has one plug. And I'm feeling the VIC love - I just love gimmicky digital displays in cars

You may not have the wire that activates the "hey you old fart you forgot to turn off your turn signal " warning, that was one of them I had to run.
