Gas mileage

Hey. I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee v8 4x4 and a 2002 4.0 4x4 but set to 2wd for most occasions. I seem to only get a little bit better gas mileage on the 4.0. Less than 2mpg better, IF the computer readout is to be trusted. Both perform well and seem strong and well in tune. Are these computers reliable/accurate? What could I do to make sure I am getting the best gas mileage on my 2002?

Thanks

J

yeah i thought ive had the same thing. my 99 wj 4.0 on the computer thing says im getting bout 14 mpg.. best thing to do it seems is to try and get up to 3rd gear quickly but not took fast. then u can get up to where u get 15 mpg most the time. other then that try and keep the car maintained well.

Not too far off, at least the Jeeps we've owned, but I'd check the accuracy manually. My old '93 4.0 ran around 19, while my wife's 5.2 about 17, summer. Got to understand the WJ is heavier by 300/400 lbs. My cousin's '04 4.0 gets just about the same mileage as my '01 4.7-17.

Plenty of threads on fuel mileage, so do some reading and you'll be amazed at some of the mileage Jeep owner's see. Geez, some even get 25 MPG!

I don't always trust the computer, so I do i the old fashion way, on teh ZJ it was alittle off, the WJ seems much better calculated.

Anyway I got about 16 average tank on a 4.0 ZJ, and I currently get about 17 average tank on the 4.7 WJ

My readout seems to be very accurate on my 97 4.0L. I do mostly highway driving. I average around 22-23 mpg. If I get under 20mpg I have been using a heavy foot haha.

2001WJ 4.0L vs 2006KJ 3.7L

I am looking at buying a used WJ with a 4.0L engine or a brand new 2006 Grand Cherokee with the 3.7L V-6.

I have a really well kept XJ 91 vintage with the 4.0L HO engine and auto trans and after 15 years of proud ownership am convinced that that engine is really resistant to any hard driving you can impose on it, indestructible in a word.

I have missgivings about buying the 3.7L which I do not know if it would stand to the challenge that the peruvian roads present (From Lima to Cuzco and back you go from sealevel to 16,000+ft altitude in at least 5 times descending to 6,000ft and back up again in mountain roads in a 2,000 mi trip length) I did this trip last July whith my XJ.

So what mileage can I expect from the WJ compared to the XJ and to the KJ

What experiences can you share with me.

I LOVED my 4.0 in the ZJ, I drove a few WJ's and it didn't seem as powerful, or raw in there, but a 3.7....I know people say it has slightly more power and all, but a number that low, in a jeep, doesn't seem right. Go with the 4.7

I just took a road trip to Vegas (from WI). I drove about 85-95 most of the way. We even went through the mountains (loveland pass) up to 12k feet as well as through the desert heat (99*) with the AC on at nearly 100mph. My average MPG for the 4237 mile trip was 19.2. This is with a 93k mile 4.7.

Prior to my JGC I had a 99 ranger with 4.0, I was lucky to get 14mph on the highway with that thing. I cant say enough good things about the 4.7!
