Fuel tank

Ive got a '98 ZJ and Im trying to formulate a semi-accurate chart to keep track of fuel efficiency (OCD maybe? LOL) and Ive come across a hitch. The fuel tank capacity that Ive read is 23 US gallons, but my fuel gauge doesnt echo this; it reads full at about 75% this figure.

Do I simply have an ineffective fuel gauge or does it actually read full when it isnt? (if this is the case how full is it when it reads 100%)?

Thanks

The needle stays on full the first 5 gallons or so before it starts to fall

what are you asking?

how to calculate mpg,s or some mechanical question as to what your gauge is telling you?

if your looking for a way to track mpg's at every fill only fill till the pump clicks off every time.
record the gallons put in and the miles logged on the trip meter.
keep a running total of every tank of gas on paper somewhere, not rocket science. maybe i'm misunderstanding the inquiry?

Last week I ran my 98 5.9 down till the over head said 7 miles till I walk.
I filled it up with 23.2 gallons, that included the filler neck to the top.

Next time I have the tank out, going to trim Vent tube back, then see how much more to fill up.

I got 360+ miles on a fill up, traveling I 95 non stop at 70 mph on cruise control.. Mid range gas with Lucus octane booster. The fill up after the run it took 21.5 gallons.

Yes this is what I was wondering. Im in Canada so this is about 20 Litres. The figures I'd seen online differed from what my fuel gauge read at full, but this explains it.

FWIW, When I changed my fuel pump, I ran it until the OH said zero till empty. When I pulled the tank, it had 4 gallons in it.

Oh yah, I definitely dont really pay attention to the OH. After fill-up it says something like 750km, when its really like 350.
