Fuel Mileage

Just took the GC on a long trip and wanted to see what the fuel economy was at the end. Put on about 1200 miles, mostly highway, and the trip computer said I averaged 18.5. Is this about right? For the first part (all highway for about 5 hours) I averaged 19.3. Which seems just about right for the V8.

Anything that can be done to increase this? K&N filter? Other alternatives?

Thanks.

It depends...

Which powertrain is in your Jeep?

Our '95 has the 5.2, auto & quadratrac (natch - all you could get with the V8), 3.73 gears & towing pkg. We run close to the EPA estimates - 14/18. As low as 12 in town, up to over 20 highway. Go faster, mileage suffers. Also hills or headwinds will affect it. On a trip to the midwest last summer, did better on flat ground than in the Rockies.

Yours is probably about right. BTW I have a K&N replacement panel. Doubt if it helps mileage much, but I never need to buy another filter!

I think your driving habits will affect your mpg more than most simple mods. Also, keep your air pressure up & don't run big fat tires!

The best I've gotten on my 98 ZJ with the 5.2L, quadrtrac, and tow pakage is 15.5 in a mix of city and highway driving. The bearings were shot in the rearend and haven't taken any road trips since it was fixed so don't know if that had any effect or not. Probably need to do a tune up too.
