Hey guys. I just have a random question.
I filled the ZJ up today after the fuel light came on. My mini overhead console said I had about 20 miles till empty. I filled to until it clicked and that was at 18.4 gallons. Now I have the build sheet from Chrysler which says 23 gallon tank. Correct me if I am wrong but that doesn't seem right, 4.5 gallons for 20 miles? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
I also use a scangauge 2 and that showed I was at 18 or so gallons used. So, why would my fuel light come on so soon and my dte show an incorrect mileage? My scangauge seems much more accurate then computer in the car, even though its plunged into the obd2 port.
Any advice helps.

Side note, my mini console doesn't reflect any accurate information for an unknown reason. I did however think that the dte would be pretty close.

i would be very surprised if the fuel gauge and the DTE read accurate. on mine, i can run the gauge down below the E and it will still go for a little bit.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I have read that it is not good to run out or get to low on fuel because it can trash the fuel pump because it is cooled by the fuel or something .

Just a thought .

I usually never let it get that low. I have heard its bad for the injectors too. Never seen any actual proof if either claim.

To prevent you from running out of gas. Ive ran mine for about 40miles after my dte said zero before. I use it as a guide, but don't really use it as a for sure thing. Just to get an idea.

Just a fail safe, dumby proof type thing to prevent you from running completely out of gas.

I can see that...I mean, I assumed that the 4.5 gallons was a reserve. Like I said I am not a fan of having the fuel light come on, but money gets tight every now and again.

The most I've ever been able to pump into mine was 20 gal, and that was needle pegged on e. I love that feature of making me think I'm low. I'm a college kid and its nice to know I've still got enough to get me to town if something happens and I'm broke.

On a side note, I ran my chevy out of gas once. A week later, a new fuel pump was required. So ill never run my zj on its reserve unless its an emergency. May not be related but I'm not chancing it.

Mine always comes on with the exact same amount of gas left, and it's always a mile short of the nearest gas station.........

Believe the fuel tanks are the same size for both the 4.0 & V-8's since the parts list goes by year/body style rather than engine size. On my 96 4.0 the gal size isn't given for the tank (#52100058, Fed), nor is it on my build sheet, but think it's 20.2 gals. May be the same for the 94-95 ZJ fuel tanks (#52127523, Fed)?

The only time I've ever ran mine out of gas was a few days ago. Gauge showed a hair under 1/8, dte was at 31 and my fuel light never came on. Thinking that was a fluke though since I've ran it down lower than that and had the fuel light come on while I was heading to fill up

ZeeJay,
After you changed the pump, is it more accurate? Or does is still have a lot of fuel left in the tank when DTE = 0?
