Fuel Gauge problems

I have 48,000 on my ZJ and haven't had many problems with it. However, on my way to work this morning, the fuel level light and buzzer went off. This wouldn't have been a big deal had I not had 3/4 of a tank at the time. Just as I looked down at the indicators, I noticed that the fuel gauge went from 3/4 down to empty and then back to 3/4 again. About 10 minutes later, I was sitting at a traffic light when it happened again. Has anyone else seen or dealt with this problem? Thanks.

I just bought a 97 GC Laredo, I have exaclty the SAME PROBLEM. I Do not know what to do yet. I keep refueling when the tank is 1/2 full. So far, I learned that it is either the Fuel Sending Unit or the Fuel Pump. I have 104K mile on my Jeep. Surprisingly, this problem only started a week after I purchased the car. Chrysler issued a recall in 1997 on faulty sending unit, however, my car was not included. Please let us know if you find a fix.

Finally -- got my problem fixed at the dealership. It was the Fuel Sending Unit, $250 parts and labor.
