fuel gauge

My fuel gauge i have noticed has stuck at the half-empty mark.

Is this a sign of a failing fuel pump ?

No, it's sign of a defect fuel gauge. Lot of this on model you have. Mine seems to stop at 1/4.

The diagnostic procedure is basically universal. If you ground the fuel gauge wire, and the gauge shows Full, then the gauge is good (and the sender is the culprit).
The wire needs to be removed from the sending unit before doing this. Attach the connector to a good grounding point and turn the key to the 'run' position. The needle will sweep from its rest position to the opposite side.

The sending unit for the fuel gauge is part of the fuel pump assembly. Near as I can tell, the wire is black/orange. Not sure if the connector can easily be accessed with the tank in place. Any one that has replaced their own fuel pump can give you first hand info, or look for a fuel pump replacement thread.

To replace fuel pump, tank down on the ground. Done it on a Cherokee, took the better part of a weekend. If rust, have new strapping arrangement ready. I had to chop off mine, impossible to unscrew. Some work, but not difficult. Beware that you are working with gas vapour.
