front driveshaft removal for diagnosis

My Jeep is a 94 ZJ with a 5.2L and I'm not sure the transfer case. It's all time 4x4 is all I know.

I've been dealing with a vibration issue at high freeway speeds and was curious if I can remove the drive shaft and drive the vehicle at high speed on the freeway. I want to test if the drive shaft could be causing the issue.

Thanks,

Curtis

The front double carden driveshaft can be rebuilt. I don't know how many miles you have on yours though.

I can't say for sure about removing it with the full-time four wheel drive. Someone should chime in pretty quick on that one. On the driveshaft rebuild, I just had my front one done. It cost around $180.

I don't even know if there's anything wrong with it. I just wanted to do a test by driving around with it off and see how it feels going down the highway. For some reason I thought there was an issue driving with no front driveshaft and all time 4x4.

I was hoping someone who had first hand knowldege or knew enough about the ZJ could give me a pointer.

There will be some fluid loss. You'll need to cover the opening.

That's a great way to diagnose, if you can keep fluid in her. Maybe a large rubber stopper? Just do it for a short drive, as the transfer case needs resistance from both ends to keep the slack tight inside. I actually sheared the rear U-joint bolts once. Crawled underneath and yanked the driveshaft out and drove 50 miles home in front wheel drive.

I drove mine around town for a day or so without the front driveshaft while I rebuilt it without any problems. The rebuild kit is $27 or somewhere around that from Napa P# 261-0617

i had the same problem with mine. same truck, vibrating on hwy and whinning in city. was told its the viscous coupler. i take my frot driveshaft off in april and put it back on in dec with no problems and no fluid leaks. was thinking about replaceing the v.c. but it would be cheaper to swap a 249 for a 242.

Hey I wanted to let you guys know I didn't need to remove the drivshaft. I replaced the lower front control arms today and both front bushings were torn. The vibration went away with the new control arms.
