Front diff noise or something else?

I recently replaced my TSL's with some cheap all terrains. Now I can hear inside the cab once again. I hear a howling from my front end which does not sound like the usual bearing noise. It is accompanied by a rrrr rrrr rrrr rrrr noise and vibration which feels like it's coming from the front diff/drive shaft area. I took a quick video to see if you may have a better idea. I already have 2 different sets of axles that I haven't started building yet. (44/10.25 and 60/10.5) I haven't had time to decide on which to build.

Question: Do you think this one will make it another 6 months or should I throw in a cheap hp30 to get me by?

I hope this video links properly

Where did you get a solid 44/10.25 combo?
The noise is probably carrier bearings or the drive shaft.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

It came from a 79 f350. I haven't pulled them yet but got the truck for $100.

Sounds like a bearing noise to me. When my 44a started that it sounded like a a roar with a slight metal sound. Happened at all speeds and was more pronounced the longer trips I took. Started to grate on my ears after about a year so I replaced the carrier bearings.

Say this is a drive shaft issue. Do you think replacing all the u joints would help? I'm generally pretty good with this suspension parts, just not axles and stuff.

What DS do you have in there? is it ujoint or the stock cv? noise sounds a lot like my 5.9 when I put it in 4wd (almost like dry gears running together) but I dont get the sound In 2wd I say take the front shaft out inspect it as a starting point

that would be a d60/d60 combo from a 350, the sterling axles weren't introduced til 85.
the 250 3800lb axle option would be hp44/d60.

Its a double carden u joint drive shaft. It still has the 249 so I'm stuck with full time 4x4. I have a 242 in the shop but haven't had time to work on it. It didn't make this noise without the front drive shaft in. I put it in for a trail ride but didn't hear it because the swampers were so loud. With the new tires, I can hear it.

I was actually looking for a 250 but came across this for $100. I didn't want to pass it up. I still haven't hauled it home yet. I didn't know the axles were both 60's. Good purchase for that price I think. Thanks man! I haven't even looked too far into it yet.

I am really hoping that whatever the problem is can make it till January. I need my four wheel drive right now.

In April, I bought a '98 5.9 and it made a very similar noise when I would let off the gas. Drove it for 6 months and then crashed, front axle was still doing fine. I think yours will last a while, but then again you've got a lift and bigger tires.

I honestly don't care if it trashes the front axle. Its coming out anyways. I can grab an HP30 that will bolt in for $75 if it dies.

Then I'd say you're definitely good to go for a few months. Mine made noise but never gave a hint of giving up

just won't have the right gear ratio. 3.73 gears in a hp30 are extremely rare.
