Freeze plugs

Recently discovered a water leak on my 94 ZJ 4.0. Thought for sure it was a head gasket. I let it sit for a couple of weeks before I had the guts to climb under it and take a look. Luckily (I think) it turned out to be one of the freeze plugs behind the manifolds was leaking. Has anyone removed one of these without first removing the intake/exhaust manifolds? All I want to do is replace the metal one with one of those expanding rubber jobbers.

Thanks,
Klaus Cook
