- - Found It!!!!!

So I bought a 96 ZJ (I6) with 111000 miles on it. So far, I love it, but unless I'm accelerating hard, it takes its time shifting from 1st to 2nd. I wanted to check the tranny fluid, but couldn't find the dipstick. My owners manual and my Haynes directed me to the rear of the engine compartment on the passenger side. After an extensive search, it turned up on the drivers side behind and well below the air intake. My question: Is anybody else's there, or should I be concerned about some massive custom work that took place in the past? Incidently, the fluid was a little low. I may change it soon, but will bringing the fluid up to the proper level correct my shifiting problem?

Bringing fluid up to the proper level cannot hurt and will probably help the shifting.
I think you've got a modification, because I've never seen one there and the dipstick for a 42RE is on the left side when looking from the bumper. You might have a different tranny. I'll do a little research.

Well, after doing some research, both the AW-4 and 42're have the dipstick tube on the left side while looking from the front bumper. Look where it mounts on the tranny. Does it curve around the oil pan or does it go straight into the tranny on the right side?

Mine is on the driver side rear below the intake also. Sounds normal to me.

Did they change it in 95? Mine was right under the A/C lines on the pass side.

Mines on the drivers side too, same spot.

That makes me feel better. They must've changed the location in 95 or so.

Yeah on my old '95 it was on the driver side.

Thanks for the input. I was concerned that a prior owner had done something radical. I guess they changed it without updating the manuals.
