Fixing 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ Sound System

The speakers are Infinity Gold. All the foam rings around the door speakers look completely deteriorated. The tweeters under the dash give distorted sound and the door speakers give no sound. It seems to have an amp under the seat.

The factory stereo ate a CD. I found a factory CD player which looks exactly what it is in the Jeep from a newer Chrysler for $85 at the junkyard.

I was looking at speaker repair kits for the door speakers. I'm not sure if it would completely fix the speakers. $50 to repair 4 Infinity speakers isn't too bad since it would be $100 just to replace the speakers with cheap speakers from Auto Zone.

http://www.simplyspeakers.com/infini...t-fsk-6.5.html

I'm concerned about the dash tweeters whether they need replacement or not. What size are there? Will any tweeter do? How do you get to them? Any recommendations on tweeters?

Is there an inexpensive option to replace all the speakers without having to be concerned about the amps and ohms?

You don't have to worry about the ohms at all. The amp can drive 2 ohms speakers now a days are 4 which is easier on the amp.

i popped the dash cover on the dash speakers. the dash speakers seem to be mounted on their side and seem to be 2" round with 1" mounting brackets on each side. they aren't easy to reach so i assume i'll need a u-joint extension. from what i can find online they are 2.5" speakers but are a custom mount.

The infinity factory amp went out on both my ZJ and WJ.

On the ZJ i just ran new speaker wire to all four door speakers and put in an aftermarket amp under the rear seat.

On the WJ, i just put an aftermarket amp where the factory amp was and all problems settled.

I'd rip everything factory out and go with the middle of the road equipment. Any 85$ aftermarket head unit with any 100$ front speakers will sound worlds better.

No need for rear speakers, just muddy the sound anyways.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

i found these tweeters which seem like they'll fit under the dash and fit the mounting backet or close enough to do some creative engineering.

http://www.amazon.com/TW12-Flush-Mount-Tweeter-Housing/dp/B000AQ8NVW/ref=sr_1_4?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1331533926&sr=1-4

found these kenwood door speakers for $20....

http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-KFC-1652S-6-5-Inch-Speaker-System/dp/B001Q9ER94/ref=sr_1_79?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1331535131&sr=1-79

found these pioneer door speakers for $25 with a better frequency range...

i might go with a head unit with ipod and android functions since she uses an android and an ipod. she'll love this. there is one for iphone and ipod too, which seems to be much more popular. i guess it depends on what you have for the one you want to get. it would help her with keeping the phone and ipod charged. i like the mount too from amazon for storage.

i'm guessing i should get these...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00029X1O6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002BF0DE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NWEJWA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HD56QE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

these are the speakers from crutchfield, which i could get the same head from amazon. since crutchfield includes free brackets and wire harnesses, it would be a little less than shopping through amazon, though i like the head mount and speakers from amazon better.

the dash speakers are 3.5" wide from screw to screw and 2" tall. the tweeter itself is 1".

the speakers look fine themselves. i'll just replace the door speakers. see how it sounds, then, replace the tweeters if necessary when i order a new head unit. i'm not sure the amp works either since all i get is crap sound from the tweeters.

I bought an 80 Sony head unit from Quadratec. Picked up 4 300 watt jenson 6.5 for my doors off eBay for 60 and it all works and sounds fine.

Not to mention soon after I floated it in a creek, took the speakers out to let them dry out. Put them back it and they still worked!

lol, don't think we'll be doing that with this grand cherokee... maybe a new one on lease, a wrangler, or one built for off-road use... that might be the problem with this jeep... it was ran through a creek before we bought it.
