Filling with gas

so latley when i have tried to fill my tank up it just wont let me. when i put the fuel pump handle in and squeeze the trigger it almost instantly clicks and stops putting fuel in my tank. at first i thought it was just that pump so i have gone to 4 different gas stations and 5 different pumps and it does it every time. it will, within 2 seconds shut the fuel off. it gets really annoying because i have to hold it on almost a low/medium pressure to put it in. is there anthign i can do or do i just have to deal with this forever now

Sometimes a similar thing happens to mine. Like, I once had to re-start the pump 4 or 5 times to get 14 gallons. Sometimes it'll be fine and sometimes it'll stop a little early.

I'm pretty sure that the fuel gauge(or whatever it's called that checks the level of the gas) is just sticking.

Mine does that sometimes, I find it can be cured by not sticking the gas nozzle all the way in. I've convinced myself that its some result of gas vapor that somehow shuts off the pump. Give it a shot, works everytime for me.

I'm not a fuel station expert, however it seems that if there is enough back-pressure the pump sensor is tripped. Do what the other person suggested and don't shove it down so far

I agree, sometimes I have to readjust the nozzle so I know the gas vapors can vent because of the new eco friendly nozzles. Think of it as a vapor lock in the filler tube and if you angle the nozzle handle down a little......well, your burping your baby as you fill it!

i'll try and give that a shot tomorrow. it just is a real pain in the butt ot stand out in the cold and hold wait forever just to put 10 or so buck in the tank.

Same thing is happening to me right now with my '93 ZJ. I had a ford ranger that would do the same thing and it turned out to be a hose on the inside of the filler that had come loose within the neck.

I tired to take apart what I could on the ZJ's filler neck, but I didn't see any obvious issues. I know it's not a gas station pump issue and I'm certain it didn't come like this from the factory.

Anyone know how or where the ZJ tank vents? It sounds to me like the tank can't take the rate of flow that the gas pump is putting into it (air and gas fighting for the same space).

Well I have found that if you turn the handle to one side or the other it usually allows you to fill. you have to hold your hand at a weird angle for a few but it usually works.

I just checked out a manual for a '98 and it looks like the fuel tank vent goes to the EVAP canister under the left headlight under the hood. I think when I get a second, I might check out that line and make sure it isn't clogged or damaged.

Mine does that at most stations. No matter how close I stick the nozzle to the filler, it still shuts off. That's why I go to the same station nearly everytime, it works fine there. I just got gas a few minutes ago at some station across town, and the same annoything shut off thing kept happening.

Everytime I fill up...I look like a crazy man out there molesting my gas tank with that pump, I ram it in and out several times until it stays on. I assumed it was the back pressure thing too. Normally I try to hold the hole open long enough to vapors out and then it won't shut it off, afterwards I feel dirty

On my moms when it does that it helps to not put it in far. It seemed like it would do it for a week or two then go back to normal.

I get this sometimes when the pump is set to the fastest pump setting. I find if its set back to the second highest notch it works fine.

This mechanism has been around for a long time, so it is safe to say there is not a miniature camera inside the nozzle hooked to a microprocessor. It's purely mechanical -- and ingenious.
Near the tip of the nozzle is a small hole, and a small pipe leads back from the hole into the handle. Suction is applied to this pipe using a venturi.
