Banned | Sometimes a similar thing happens to mine. Like, I once had to re-start the pump 4 or 5 times to get 14 gallons. Sometimes it'll be fine and sometimes it'll stop a little early. I'm pretty sure that the fuel gauge(or whatever it's called that checks the level of the gas) is just sticking. |

Registered User | Mine does that sometimes, I find it can be cured by not sticking the gas nozzle all the way in. I've convinced myself that its some result of gas vapor that somehow shuts off the pump. Give it a shot, works everytime for me. |

Do what the other person suggested and don't shove it down so far Quick! You are almost out of gas! Think of it as a vapor lock in the filler tube and if you angle the nozzle handle down a little......well, your burping your baby as you fill it! __________________ "If I can't buy it or borrow it, I don't need it" -1994 ZJ Lifted and Locked... -1983 CJ7 4.2ltr/Dana 300/Warn F&R bumpers...and some other goodies. Registered User | Same thing is happening to me right now with my '93 ZJ. I had a ford ranger that would do the same thing and it turned out to be a hose on the inside of the filler that had come loose within the neck. I tired to take apart what I could on the ZJ's filler neck, but I didn't see any obvious issues. I know it's not a gas station pump issue and I'm certain it didn't come like this from the factory. Anyone know how or where the ZJ tank vents? It sounds to me like the tank can't take the rate of flow that the gas pump is putting into it (air and gas fighting for the same space). |

Registered User | Well I have found that if you turn the handle to one side or the other it usually allows you to fill. you have to hold your hand at a weird angle for a few but it usually works. |

Registered User | I just checked out a manual for a '98 and it looks like the fuel tank vent goes to the EVAP canister under the left headlight under the hood. I think when I get a second, I might check out that line and make sure it isn't clogged or damaged. |

That's why I go to the same station nearly everytime, it works fine there. I just got gas a few minutes ago at some station across town, and the same annoything shut off thing kept happening. __________________ Justin 1993 ZJ Laredo 5.2 V8 • 4" lift • 31s • JKS f & r track bars • JKS discos • Cragar Soft 8s • DT 3000s • OME Stabilizer K&N drop-in • Dynomax Exhaust • Hella 500s • Westin Safari Bar • KOR Radiator Support Dark Rosewood Jeep Club Member #5 |

I ate what? ![]() Join Date: Sep 2003 Location: STL (IL side) Posts: 8,296 | Everytime I fill up...I look like a crazy man out there molesting my gas tank with that pump, I ram it in and out several times until it stays on. I assumed it was the back pressure thing too. Normally I try to hold the hole open long enough to vapors out and then it won't shut it off, afterwards I feel dirty ![]() __________________ Ken 99 GC Limited - 4.7L HO V8, 6.5" IRO HC LA lift, F&R D44s locked & trussed, 242HD, IRO TC Skid, KMA Bumper, 33" Yokohama Mud Rovers 2006 Saturn Redline -2.0L Eaton supercharged I4, GMPP Stage 2, Custom Tune, AEM CAI, Falken 912's (13.76 @ 103.85) 2004 Sebring Convertible - (her's) 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 - CAI, Soft 8's, 31's 2000 SV650 - naked, integrated tail light, sliders, corbin, pilot roads, RK chain & sprokets, D&D full exhaust, FactoryPro Stage I jet kit, +4 Ignition Advancer, Barnett race clutch January 2009 Grand Cherokee of the Month (GCOTM) |

Registered User Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Lexington, KY Posts: 4,479 | I get this sometimes when the pump is set to the fastest pump setting. I find if its set back to the second highest notch it works fine. quoted: This mechanism has been around for a long time, so it is safe to say there is not a miniature camera inside the nozzle hooked to a microprocessor. It's purely mechanical -- and ingenious. Near the tip of the nozzle is a small hole, and a small pipe leads back from the hole into the handle. Suction is applied to this pipe using a venturi. When the tank is not full, air is being drawn through the hole by the vacuum, and the air flows easily. When gasoline in the tank rises high enough to block the hole, a mechanical linkage in the handle senses the change in suction and flips the nozzle off. Here's a way to think about it -- you've got a small pipe with suction being applied at one end and air flowing through the pipe easily. If you stick the free end of the pipe in a glass of water, much more suction is needed, so a vacuum develops in the middle of the pipe. That vacuum can be used to flip a lever that cuts off the nozzle. The next time you fill up your tank, look for this hole either on the inside or the outside of the tip. Heres some interesting things to: http://www.epa.gov/donttopoff/ __________________ - Joe - '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo I6 4.0L 242TC - Extreme Engineering 2" Front Lift/1.75" Rear Lift - ES9000 Shocks + JKS BPEs Moog Cargo Control Springs Magnaflow Converter - Dynomax Muffler 235/75/15 AT Uniroyal Liberator Tires |
