Since yours is a 96, this means you have to replace the fuel pump. The sending unit is a float attached to the fuel pump, and is non replaceable on 93-96.

that's insane ...

They won't pass your ride because your gas/petrol gauge may or may not be accurate ...

I would take it again and see if it would pass ...

Their machine may or may not be accurate too ...

They don't care over here wheather or not if you even have a gas gauge ...

Jeeze ...

Alternatively, if its like Texas, some counties do emissions tests some don't...take a drive over the county line

Chrysler didn't make an accurate fuel gauge between 1990 and now, even the replacements will often not show accurately or d do the chrysler standard random drop to empty trick.

GM either, for that matter ... I'm old school ...

From slap full to 3/4's, it seemed like killer mileage, but from there down it fell like a rock ...

Well not quite, but you know ...

That was a "voluntary" emissions recall for 97 models . Apparently , they should have had it for 96 as well .

It does, the 97's have a replaceable float, but I'd say try to have it retested elsewhere first since like has been mentioned here Chrysler doesn't make accurate gas gauges.

Mine for instance is rock-solid about when its full on gas, or running on empty. In between its anyone's guess.
