Exstreme Exhaust Rattle (yes, Exstreme)

The exhaust in my ZJ has always been a bit on the clunky side, but more recently, it's been more than noisy. It seems that at low revs at low gear, it seems to intermittently make this deep throated rattling noise that is extremely noisy as of recently, especially in 4lo 1st gear.

All I've got is speculation and having zero shop tools at my place, I can't exactly diagnose it w/o taking it to the shop (which costs extra $$$)

Is there any small little diagnosis tests that I can run on it w/o any shop tools to see if it's something loose, or is it really what I hope it isnt, a disintegrated cat? I've already done the standard listen to it while running under the car but I can't pinpoint where it's coming from.

2wd can really get you places you can't get out of without 4lo. - Ratmonkey

Check everything, all bolts, hangars, heatsheilds and if its not one of those then hit/shake your muffler/cat and you might just find out if it is the exhaust.

Heat shield's can make quite the rattle...
Your not pushing the limits of your jeep until your on your side, then something breaks and it's time to go home.

93 red ZJ 190k 4.0. Spent more money than I should have ...

Isn't red the only color a vehicle should be?
If at first you don't succeed, use more speed.

We had to get a new muffler because it was all rusted out.

Check cat. Thats what mine was. Sounded terrible at low rpms when idling or at a low gear/rpm. It was all the insides of the cat had been broken (common issue). I just took the cat out and welded in some exhaust pipe.
