Engine wine

Ok, its the usual problem. I have a '93 ZJ "the Green Monster" it wines horibly when the engine is on, but of course its too hard to tell where its comming from. What should I do? Drive and wait? It sounds like its comming right from the front. Its got to be one of the bearings, but which one?

Assuming it's engine noise, not drivetrain...

If you don't yet have a mechanic's stethoscope, get your longest screwdriver and place the end of the handle against the side of your head, just in front of your ear. Avoiding moving fans, belts, and pulleys, touch the tip of the screwdriver to different areas such as idler pulley, water pump, power steering pump, alternator etc. It'll help you find the source of the noise.

I can't help it, check for small neighborhood animals.

Okay,

open the hood and try to diagnose the problem by getting as close to what part of the engine is doing the whinning.

I'd only recommend to check for small neighborhood animals if it was early in the springtime. Since it's summer then it's gotta be a mechanical problem.
