Engine swap question

I'm getting ready to tear down the 5.2L engine in my 97 GC because of broken main bearings. I'm curious how hard it would be to convert the 5.2L to a 5.9L. Could I get away with just swapping out a rebuilt 5.9 block or is there more to it than that...

you can send a pm to five niner or 5.9Andy....both are very knowledgable with 9's. I am under the impression you would also need a different tranny and so forth.

Not true. But yea to squeeze out every last HP you will need a PCM flash.

My 95 with a stock 5.9 from a 98 GC and STOCK 95 PCM runs like a Swiss clock. Jumps off the line and pulls hard to redline. And I got 16pmg on mixed driving last tank including a slow jaunt in the mtns.

Its that simple. You just need a the 5.9 flexplate and harmonic balancer because the 5.2 is internally balanced and the 5.9 is externally balanced. I have a spare 5.9 balancer and flexplate I will sell pretty cheap.

OK so I can keep the 5.2 ECU but do I need the 5.9 tranny or can i keep the 5.2 tranny. I really dont want to get rid of it because it was just rebuilt.

You can keep the 44RE tranny. How long it will hold up to the extra torque is anyone's guess.

Well its only a couple thousand miles old. So it sounds like all I need is a short block, harmonic balancer, and a flexplate. Now i just gotta find the 5.9 block.
