Engine running hot

I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I noticed that the temp runs between 210-230 when the A/C is running and its 95+ degrees out. I in the past 2 years have had the water pump/thermostat replaced, engine 'flushed', radiator replaced, new 'extreme duty' fan clutch put in. Nothing seems to keep the temp at 190, as I was advised by a Jeep service tech. Anyone else experience this issue? What are your theories on what to check next? I live in the Phoenix Metro area where the temps can be extreme and do not want to cause damage to the engine by constantly running 'hot'. Have only had this problem the past couple of years.

First ensure that your lower radiator hose isn't collapsing. Then, with the engine cold, remove your radiator cap and inspect it. Check for tears in the rubber seal and that the spring is still in good shape. It should support 18lbs (I think 18lbs is factory) and if it doesn't it should be replaced.

Which engine? ( please help us to help you, by filling out your profile).

Every 4.0 I've seen runs at a constant 210...of you believe the temp gauge.
Mine will tick up once in a while in slow traffic with the air on, but not much. I usually notice it, cut the air off, shift the tranny in neutral and rev it just a bit to cool it down. Other than that, I think that asking for 190 on the temp gauge in a 4.0 is unreasonable...but I am assuming you have one of the V8s ?

My 4.0 has run for the last 10 years just a needle's width above 210 regardless of the time of year, or whether I have the ac on or not. The only time I ever saw higher temperatures is when my radiator needed to be replaced. My runs at this temp even with air in the system. I would sure like to get that out of there, but I don't have anywhere I can legally burp it. Dang Cali.

I have never gotten 190 running temps that your tech says you should have.

V8's are the same. Worse in traffic! I have new everything plus an all aluminium rad. and easily I get over 210 in traffic. Like said before, turn the air off a it gets better.

I'm in FL. Panhandle too, if that means anything to you.

My 5.2 stays at the mid point between the line before 210 and 210 (195-200 ish). Also here in the valley we see triple digits constantly. It was 124 according to my evic in both my caliber and jeep a couple of weeks ago and it still didn't break 210 with the air on.

So it is definitely possible to run at a lower temp with the factory cooling system.

There's a reason that 210 the reading at the top center of that gauge. It's easier to spot a problem that way. Most critical gauges are set up with the ideal number at 12 o'clock for that reason. Oil pressure at 40 lbs is the same way.

Speedometer......uh.....er..well...let's skip that anomaly...

Like every one else already stated, 210 is perfectly fine. Could you be confusing the 190 with the temp that the thermostat is suppose to open? My 97 runs anywhere between 210-230 for the 30k miles since i owned it.

My 5.2 runs at 170* range when warm. But I also run a 180* stat. No issues ever in 9 months of having it, and I'm in cool Maine too.

I've been running 'hot' too (94 Laredo), and after replacing the distributor oddly enough, it got noticeably better where I would hold a constant 210 to a (needle width over). Prior to that it would be creeping up to the 220 tick mark under normal driving. Ive also replaced the radiator cap with the OEM, but on hot humid days or when the outside air temp is mid 80's and up it will creep up to 230 at times, especially when driving at highway speeds (2000 RPMs). Turning off the AC will help a bit but it never gets back under 220, and just seems 'too high' and I can't seem to find anything else wrong. Any other recommendations?

New water pump, radiator? could it be the gauge itself?

In your situation, I would look at the fan clutch. If your temps are creeping up while driving, it could be the fan clutch not engaging to spin the fan closer to engine RPM. You would normally hear the fan spinning up when engaged as it does get noticeably louder.

Real good flush, burp it, check your fan clutch and make sure you got the whole fan shroud together!......Jus found mine in the garage the other day, helps out quite a bit!

i have the 5.2 and i run a 180 t-stat.

without the AC on, it stays at about 180 both in town and on the highway.

with the AC on going down the highway, it will slowly creep up to about 210 and stay about there.

in town with the AC on, it will slowly creep up, and up, and up... i will shut the AC off when it gets a needle's width above the 3/4 mark... 225 i believe it is. so i'm shutting it off when it gets to about 230.


i'm pretty sure i need a new fan clutch.

i can rev it in neutral while at a stop light and i can't hear the fan at all. if i park somewhere after it gets hot, i can hear the fan engage at idle and i can feel it moving a lot of air through the grille, as soon as i rev it up a bit to about 1500 rpm, it seems to disengage and doesn't move near as much air while holding the revs at 1500.

the only time i hear the fan actually roar is on cold startup.

does this sound like a bad fan clutch? sorry if i'm hi-jacking OP's thread.

I have a 180 stat in and it's a bit too cool in winter but perfect right now. It sits pegged at the mark below 210(200?) no matter what traffic with ac blasting and 96* outside.

When I dropped a new radiator in it a year ago I didn't burp it and there was air trapped in the system. I saw the temp go pas 210 then.
