Engine Mounts?

so i took the jeep in, noticing some vibration at idle.
the mechanic calls, says that both motor mounts are broken
says it's not a big deal, it will just vibrate a little...
sounds like a big deal to me, but then again, i know very little.
he says it won't hurt anything if left unfixed
is this true?

Yea...it'll just be annoying and eventually start to get worse. It won't hurt anything leaving it like it is. Just depends on how much it bugs you. I had the mounts go out on my '94 at around 200,000 miles and had them replaced...it wasn't cheap either, but I can't remember the exact price. ---HTH

Some of the hazards associated with broken motor mounts:

hard acceleration will result in a new profile for your hood
hard acceleration can result in twisted transmission linkages

Motor mounts are not overly expensive and are deceptively easy to change. This would be a great opportunity for you to achieve a closer oneness with your Jeep.

The other problem I see with waiting longer to correct is, that the transmission & transfer case is also mounted to the frame with rubber bushings. These will now see an excessive amount of wear if the motor mounts are in poor shape.

My motor mounts were shot, I mean the rubber was GONE! OK, so I went to a local mechanic to have them replaced and he told me that the left one cost $40 and the right cost $140-parts only. I figured something was wrong and I went to a parts store where I bought the left for $14 and the right for $14. I replaced them myself, and the only trouble was on the right side, I had to remove the altenator to access the nut on the mount rod.
I HAD to replace them because every time I stepped on the gas, the fan blades hit the plastic crowl and the engine lurched up and forward. I was afraid the fan would hit the raditor core. I took about 2 hours to complete the job at a leasure pace.
