Driving 100kph = 3,000rpms

Normally driving at 100kph on the highway I'd get about 2,100 rpms but just recently it would reach up to 3,000rpm's. On the odd time it would level out back down to 2,100 give or take.

Could this be a faulty sensor? Or just a leak in the exhaust manifold/pipes?

I have a 94 Grand Cherokee, I'll be replacing the cat convertor, muffler and oxygen sensor soon.

Anyone have any ideas of why I'm getting such a high rpm?

You are using the tach to read the engine speed increase, but do you hear the engine speed increase as well? If you do, then I would suspect a problem with the transmission.

Do you have your overdrive on? Because mine goes from about 2000 to 3000 RPM's when I turn it on.

Overdrive is off, sometimes it will engage by itself and won't turn off when i push the button.

I think you have this backwards. With overdrive off you should be at around 3000rpms. You should have overdrive on for normal driving and that will have you around 2100rpms. Really the only time to turn it off is if your hauling a trailer. Even on the trail there is no reason to turn it off because you probaly won't be up in the higher gears anyway.

Now if it is on (which is default) and you hearing the engine going to up around 3000rpms. Then your transmission might be slipping or torque converter. I think I got that explained right.

Could it be a faulty overdrive switch kicking it on/off?
