drivetrain binding popping at low speeds

Hi i have a 94 grand cherokee limited 4x4. I notice after highway trips of 25+ miles on warm/hot days i have issues turning sharp i.e into a parking space.

Symptoms are ; binding of wheels while making sharp turns. Popping in front (sounds like its near wheels) some wheel hop/ chirping.

Eventually if i keep a sharp turn radius the vehicle will come to a stop and if i give it some gas it still doesnt want to move forward (note when it binds like this i reverse and make my turn angle less sharp to avoid major damage)

What parts should i inspect for damage and diagnosis?

All tires are appropriate size to vehicle and all stock

Sounds like another 249 VC "viscous coupler" thread.

Your viscous coupler is worn out.
Replace it with a new one, never buy a used all wheel drive, or else replace the case with one of the other jeep models like 242/231. There are probably a few thousand threads on this by now.

Since you also have popping I'd wager there's damage in the differential or a bad cv shaft because of the bad transfer case.
The early model case like yours wears out by 100k in every jeep.

The VC is in the transfer case, as such, your transfer case is bad.

Actually if youve got a dead VC it will be locked in part-time 4WD and cause a fair bit of strain in driveline due to windup. That's pretty hard on components, causes a lot more wear.

D30 front axle and occasiionally front driveshaft are sometimes going south because of that.

Mine did, had to redo the diff.

How is it then that i am able to drive 75mph for 30-45 min without any strain or issues, but as soon as i pull off the highway and into a parking lot i have issues at very low speed sharp turning?

If it were locked in 4wd wouldnt i have issues while driving down the highway?

not necessarily. the vc issue will only show itself during sharp turns. theoretically if you always drove in a straight line, you could drive forever on a bad vc from what i understand.

Ive experienced similar issues. Going straight isnt a problem. Its turning where youre gonna feel it

Remove the front shaft when you are not too busy and drive it in slow figure 8's. If it's gone then VC. It will roll in park with the front shaft out though. So be careful if you leave it out.

Mine did the same thing. Went to Vegas and back with a shot VC. Straight driving at high speeds didn't effect it at all, getting off the highway was another story once i came to a stop and had to make a turn. Pull the front shaft out and test it out. Like polka said, it'll roll in park.
