Drive Without Front Driveshaft??

I have been lurking here for quite a while now, and have learned a ton from you fine folks. I have been able to find the answers to my questions just from searching the forums, so I've only posted twice in the last 7 years. ( good grief, 7 years!?!) Well, I finally found a question I couldn't find the answer to.

I have a '95 ZJ, 5.9l with an NP249. The VC has finally given up the ghost. I have a donor transfer case, a Haynes, a Chiltons, and this forum...and just enough knowledge to be dangerous . Problem is, it is just too dang hot to be out there working on it now. So I'm looking for a temporary work-around. I know on selectable 2-wheel/4-wheel drive vehicles, you can remove the front shaft and drive as 2-wheel drive only. But this stupid Quadra-Trak thing??

TLDR: My question is, "Can I drop the front driveshaft and drive it until the weather cools down in a couple months?? Just short local runs, not driven daily.

If the VC already done for then you won't hurt anything by taking out the shaft. You just need to be real careful where you park because on 93-95 249's front shaft removal can allow the ZJ to roll free. So make sure the e brake works and you chock the tires or something.

Awesome, I will definitely remember to park in a safe manner to avoid rolling! Thank you very much.

It wont roll free, but whatever slip the VC still has (and it should still have SOME) will allow the Jeep to roll VERY slowly. Just use the ebrake (you should anyway) and possibly throw a block of wood under the wheel.

I had the front shaft off my 5.9 for almost a year, parked on a slightly sloped driveway, it didn't roll.

The second gen 249 is NOT the same case as the first gen 249.

It's fine to remove the front shaft off a 96+ 249 even with a good VC it will not damage it. 93-95 you will ruin the VC by removing the front shaft and it can roll. Like tjcustoms story lmao.
