drive shaft

so i got my ZJ last december. it was in pretty good condition, with very few problems.... except one big one. The front drive shaft and drive axles had been removed by the PO. i have two questions. first: what possible reason could they have had to remove them? and second: if i replace the drive shaft with one from a scrap yard, will it need to be balanced or can i pop it right in? thanks for your help guys, cuz im at a loss

Most likely removed because the viscous coupling in the transfer case is toast. Common problem for V8 models with 150k+ miles.

And/or the front gears are toast and he removed the axle shafts and the drive shaft so the pinion wouldn't turn.

Thats more of what I was thinking.

The VC will wear down the pinion bearings much faster from the added strain, and once they start whining and grinding some people just take out the inner shafts and leave the outers so the pinion wont turn.

this,

and when a VC goes bad, you are in parttime 4wd. Not good on asphalt. Accelerated wear on the entire drivetrain.

Mine has 184000 and my vc are kinda still good... not binding but they do whine... or the front end does because the PO forgot to put oil in my front axle. It was bone dry almost when i finally checked it.

Everything is fine now. Added Axle Fluid in it and everything is good... good thing it sat for 2 years and leaked out and not driven at all. I drove it for about 2 miles and started to notice the axle starting to whine so i stopped and look... fixed it before any damage was done.

If you are actually going to fix the 249, a new VC can be had on ebay for around $300, and its not too hard to install but its not like changing a starter either. very time consuming.

skrew that. i guess if thats the problem ill go get a new diff. im not in to spending all that much time and money. and with my luck i would fix it and something else in it would break. at this point im banking on the PO just being a moron and thinking pulling the 4wd would save on gas...
