Thanks in advance for your help!
Mopar make a "kit" just for that purpose that is part of a TSB for the problem of armrest cracking and discoloration on a few model years. I bought one for my '98 ('97 is the same) last year, and had a hell of a time finding the part number.
You must remove the door panel, break off the plastic "tits" that secure the upper armrest area (from armrest to door switch area) , install the new piece, and use spring clips to secure the new part to the panel. If you look closely at your panel, you can see that it is made of seprate pieces. The "kit" works very well, and looks fantastic.
I bought mine from makeitmopar.com for about $90 IIRC. It's a Mopar part, so you should be able to get it anywhere. I'll do a search for the part number/TSB & report back if I find it.
EDIT: That was quick!
Success! I went into the garage and found the old one in the box, with some info that included this link.
You need to look at the top box for Laredo models.
You're in luck. The tan ones are about half the price of the agate color I needed. You can get it for $50.
BTW: Even 'tho the TSB says for '96 year, it works fo '97 & '98 also. I know, cause it's on my Jeep!
