Does PCM have to be programmed by dealer?

As the title states, but for a 1997 Jeep grand cherokee, with 5.2L.

From what I've heard is that it does have to be programmed with the VIN and mileage, and that the ABS, airbags and other stuff may not work properly if the VIN is not correct.

Depends...

Is it a new PCM or a used PCM?

If it's brand new with no VIN you can run into some of the problems you mentioned, but it's mostly just weird stuff like those lights not going out after startup.

If it's used it will have a VIN in it and you're good to go. Doesn't matter if it doesn't match the vehicle VIN from everything I've seen and heard - mine passed MA emissions inspection with no problems, and that was with a 98 5.2 5spd Dodge PCM.

Pretty sure the PCM does not record miles either. Not 100% sure but I do know it's the BCM (Body Control Module) that records it and shows it on the cluster. Changing PCM won't change the miles your cluster shows, changing the BCM will.

Happiness is clear in the cab and 150 over 150.

Cardones aren't cheap but they seem to have a better chance in some of the opinions.

Did not know that.

Although I imagine the remans have had the previous VIN wiped, so it would still be the same thing.

Best part is, it turns into a security PCM after 15 starts or so, so no reason to give it back after that, LOL

...except I think all late ZJs had security didn't they? oh well, I guess it might only apply to Dodges

Cardone...from Oreilly's. They have been great about exchanging them under their 1 year warranty too. As a result, I buy other stuff from Oreilly's whenever I can.

As of today, it's 270+ miles on the new PCM and today it even rained outside.....and not a hint of a stall or hiccup. I may have gotten my hands on a great PCM this time. ( crossing my fingers). I understand there were two manufacturers of the 96-98 PCMs. One sucked more than the other, I'm told.

Cool. Orielys is my place too. Even bought the crate from there. It's around 10k right now. This is the firs prob I've had, and I don't think it has anything to do with the motor.
