Do the ZJ horror stories have any truth to them?

I'm looking to buy a jeep and I can't decide between the XJ and the ZJ. From a looks/comfort/power prospective, I'd really like to get a ZJ, but I have heard a lot of bad things about them. I've heard...

The differentials fail often
The transmissions suck
They are unreliable in general

If the above is true, I will just get a XJ because I have heard nothing but good about them. But like I said, I'd really prefer the power of the V8 and the comfort of the ZJ.

Opinions, thoughts, advice?

Thanks!

I have a 96 ZJ, no problems up to this point, :knocking on wood: I think that my ZJ is pretty reliable, its outlasted anything that we have at my house or ever owned... my .02

I've had my 97 TSi for just over 2 years and put 50k on it. Aside from normal wear and tear (Oil changes/Brakes/ Belt) The only part that has died on me was the water pump and it will need a new battery soon. Not bad for the 80k it has on it with me beating the hell out of it.

Got our '95 when new, now has 75K miles. Had a few minor teething problems but nothing serious. Warped front rotors a couple times, but fairly cheap & very easy to replace. Lost a water pump a while back which was a bit of a PITA to replace. Door hinge pins are wearing out (driver's door worst, naturally). These are difficult to replace, and Geez, the hinges on my '72 Chevy pickup (daily driver) are still perfect! Oh, the battery failed a couple years ago, and I recently replaced the front axle CV boots.

Generally, our ZJ has been very reliable and based on my experience I would recommend them.
