how much can you turn either ouput in 4pt before the other one starts turning?

a little clacking is ok, anything more than 1/8 turn and you probably do need a chain.

open it up and see, it only takes about 20 mins.

there is going to be some slack. The real test is under a load in 4L, like a hill climb. What I do is with the jeep up on jack stands running, in 4 low, in drive, use the brakes to put a load on the drivetrain. You dont want the wheels to stop spinning, but you wana be braking hard (right foot on brakes) and applying throttle (other right foot). I used to do it with my 231 in my cherokee with a 5 speed. It would almost stall the motor then the chain would jump a tooth.

^^^^ the t-case is out of my jeep.

ratmonkey, theres defanetley less than an 1/8th a turn of play but i am rebuilding the case so maybe ill just replace the chain anyways. the only thing is that a rebuild kit is like $100 and a rebuild kit w/ chain is $180 so the chain is defanetley an expensive part. just cleaned it up today, will be heading to the junk yard tomorrow because i need the shift tab and a new tail cone for it.

hows this look for a rebuild kit?

I think it's fairly normal looking.

I did an SYE conversion on my wife's '93 YJ's NP231 and I put a new ($100) chain in it at the same time. Her's seems to have about the same amount of slop as the one in your video.

Three people and four flat head screw drivers gets the job done.

cracked it open today, chain is tight, thanks guys, the play wasnt even chain related and is 100% normal. upon inspection it appears that it doesnt even need a rebuild, just the rear output bearing and some seals. got my shifter and rear cone at the junk yard today now its time to pull the 249 to see if i even need to mess with the input swap.

ordered a few parts for the 231, couple seals, couple bearings and all 6 shift fork pads. pulled out my 249 today and discovered that the input is the same length but the donor is the 21 spline and the 249 is 23 spline so now i have to tear down the 249. its amazing how huge the 249 is compared to the 231, i knew it was bigger but man the 249 is huge. im not going to be able to hook up my VIC because the 231 is too old and doesnt have an electronic hook up but that doesnt bother me. here are a couple pics.

old 249, a huge piece of ****!

231 being taken apart

main 231 innards, pretty basic actually

231 casings all cleaned up and finished with some mopar blue bling

That is one clean looking 231. Did you take apart the 249 yet? Check out how huge the VC is, it's pretty heavy too.

yep, 249 torn apart, sun gear/input swapped, VC heavy as hell, parts arrived today and 231 put together and ready to go.

ready to assemble

new rear output seal

new rear output bearing

new shift fork pads

and all done, excuse all the silicone, sealed it and realized i forgot the spring on the end of the shift fork rod so i had to crack it open and seal it again.

Did you remember to put the magnet back in? We forgot to and had to open it back up after we just finished sealing it.
