Hi All - I have a 99 WJ Limited 4.7 with about 130,000 miles on it. I have 2 issues and am not sure what to do. If anyone could help, I would appreciate it.
Issue 1) On the passenger side of my front axle, I have a ton of nasty/cakey gunk all over the supports. It looks like I have a bad gasket or something (like grease is coming out of the end of the axle). Anyone know if this is something where I can just get a new gasket/boot or do I need a whole new axle? or do you need pics/more info?
Issue 2) My Transfer Case (247) looks like it leaking a reddish fluid. Looks like it's coming out of the middle where the gasket is. I only noticed this as I was on wet grass on a hill the other day, tried to get out and my rear tires spun. Usually the fronts will kick in at that point and pull me out. Seems like I'm driving with only the back wheels now. I'm assuming if it's not working at all, adding fluid won't help.
Apologies if these descriptions aren't clear. I can supply more info and pics if it would help explain my issue better.
Your axle seal is NFG. The diff fluid is running down the axle tube and making it past the CV-joints and onto the steering knuckle. The axle needs to be removed and a seal replacement is necessary. I think people here remove the axle themselves and then bring it to a shop for the pressing of the new seal?
It appears that your Quadra-trac TC has morphed into a Quadra-junk TC?
Might help if you were a little more detailed.. Is it thick grease or more of a gear oil on the supports you speak ok?
Gear oil would be the axle seal, grease would be a torn cv axle boot..
I do know on my 231 theres a weep hole at the bottom of the transfer case and I had a leak there. (was a seal in between the TC and transmission) had to drop the rear axle and TC to get to it..
Today for the first time, it did seem like it was beginning to make noise as I moved it from the driveway into the garage. would it be better to just top off the fluid or try draining it first, then refilling? I'll start by wiping the whole case down, refilling, and realy monitoring where anything comes out over the next few days. Thanks for the response!
Greasefingers and Joe.ls - I have attached a couple of pics of the "grease" issue on my front axle. The pics were taken tonight.
For orientation, I was under the passenger seat portion of the Jeep facing towards the front of the car (you can see the pass FR tire off to the right)
The consistency of the grease is like a really moist/wet brownie. It's mixed in with a bunch of dirt. It does seem more like a really thick oil to me. Take a look at the pics and let me know what you think. Thanks for you help and expertise on this.
Here are the pics:

Sorry for the small pics - That's all Imageshack will give me for some reason
That would be your axle seal leaking. You have to pull both front axles shafts out, remove the differential carrier and replace the seals. You may as well do both as you already have the whole front end apart at this point.
Your 247 tcase takes special oil, so if that has leaked out and something else was put in you may have problems. Also if it was run low on fluid, its most likely shot as there are clutch plates inside the tcase similar to an automatic transmission. If its red fluid leaking out is it transmission fluid from inbetween the tcase and the rear of the transmission?? I believe the oil for the tcase is about the same color as engine oil.

Thanks for the detailed answer. This should put me on the right track. Yes, the oil dripping off the side of the tcase is red and does look like tranny fluid. I haven't changed the fluid recently, but when I did a while ago, it was some sort of friction modified stuff the dealer recommended specially for the 247.
I use the Jeep as a 2nd car right now. It seems like everything was perfect until I stopped driving it daily. Now when I take it out once or twice a week, I notice issues like those above.
Thanks again!
