Do I have a limited slip diff?

The car is a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2WD. The differential looks like it's the Dana 35C. Is it limited slip? The reason I ask is b/c I will be changing the oil now and need to know if I should add friction modifiers or not.

no, the C just means custom, meaning it came from Dana without axles or internals. You should have a tag in you're glove box which would state whether or not you have LSD. My guess is that you do not.

The C indicates that it uses a C clip inside the diff to hold the axles in.

Easiest way to tell if you have a LSD or open diff is to jack up the rear end of the Jeep, spin one tire. If the other tire spins in the opposite direction, it's an open diff. If it spins in the same direction, it's a LSD.

Easiest way is to take the VIN to a dealer or email Chrysler and ask for a build sheet.

Nope, not in WJ's. gilandj was right on the money. With a 2wd WJ, I'd say there's pretty much a 0% chance that you have an LSD. The trac-lock was a VERY rare option in early WJ's and I can't see a 2wd being ordered with one...

and the easiest way yet to tell is to crawl under it, look at the diff tag, and see if it says "L S" on the tag.

if theres no tag go pianoman's route

The "c" stands for "custom" because it was supplied by Dana for Chrysler, without axles or bearings. It also had a larger ring gear(from 7.562" to 7.79") and 7/16" bolts instead of 3/8's. Any d35 from 90' and on has "c' clips,

Hey everyone. I just took off my differential cover and the rear of the car is in the air right now. There is this weird circle on the inside of the diff cover by the drain plug with an "X" inscribed in it and it seems to be full of something like anti-seize. Any idea what this is? I've never seen something like this before. Should I clean it out or leave it alone?

Is there a magnet on it? Sometimes the plugs are magnetic to catch any small metal shavings.

Is this a metal plug or rubber? Is the stuff(anti-seize) hard or soft? I don't think someone would use anti seize for this. it might be dried RTV

The plug itself is rubber. This is above the plug and cannot be seen from the outside. I was thinking it was a magnet, but I just touched a bolt against it and I didn't feel anything. Truly odd. It's got a silver paste all around it.

The paste is soft like fresh aluminum anti-seize compound. It's the same color too. I have no idea what it is.
