did the gas tank lift today..

1st off, pics will be up when i wake up in 2-3 days
2nd.. Don't attempt this project without atleast 1 or 2 somewhat knowledgeable friends, and give yourself atleast a day to complete it.

that being said, it was well worth it. i kind of went my own way for sealing up the spare tire well and running the filler lines, etc, but it came out really clean

i drilled a 3 inch hole in the unibody and sent the filler and the other small line that goes with it through that, and capped the hole with a 3" peice of exhaust pipe.
I cut the stock gas tank skid and used the brackets already on it just by welding them back on the skid, like Agitatedpancake did in his wj
and for capping off the old spare tire well, i cut out the bottom of the well, made several vertical cuts down it about 1-2" deep, and then bent it out and welded it back in place, that way the tank could be nice and tucked up against it like in stock form
overall i gained an estimated 6-8" of clearance from what it used to be
my hitch and the evap. box thing are now the lowest hanging things in the rear end.

overall i'd say the project was well worth it, and i deffinately recommend doing this for anyone who wheels their wj anywhere near rocks

Were you always landing on the skid or something??

The thing I hit most on the rocks is the thing that holds the hitch wiring harness in place.

I had landed on my tank so hard and so many times in the stock location that my 20.5 gallon tank ended up in the 17 gallon range. When i did my gas tank lift i also upgraded to the beefier skidplate as well

ok, heres the pics
and yes, i did just wake up. 1:05

hole for filler neck and other hoses

brackets and edge of spare tire well cleaned up for welds

finished hole for filler neck and hoses

cover getting welded back in place (i did it this way so the tank could be tucked up right against it, just like in the stock location)

clearance without the tank

making sure everything still fits after the skid was welded up

my normally very clean garage after the project

clearance!

instead of using a true 4-link setup, it's got an a-arm that meets ontop of the differential, and has a ball joint type thing connecting the 2 together

looks awesome!

about the a-arm. installing that damn a-arm spacer was a pain in the ***. if my tank was lifted like that, it would have been much easier.

That's what i was just thinking. I'll be replacing the a-arm ball joint next week, it would be so much simpler if my gas tank weren't in the way.

but x2 on having a friend who knows a thing or two ... I couldn't have done it with out my buddy helping me

BTW when you put the filler Tube back in is your kinked ? mine is kinda kinked but fills up fine

hahha I see we both have the same taste in diff cover color
