Dead zj (AGAIN)

Hey all,

my jeep died again. This time 1/4 mile away from home.

This is just getting frustrating.
Not sure what did it this time though.
Luckily I had my volt meter, I am getting signal from my coil....
I have fuel pressure at the rail.


One thing I did notice is when I am cranking it, My tach isn't moving. Should it move when I am cranking?


My immediate thought is crank sensor?

Any other thoughts?

You say again.. So did you fix the problem last time? Or did it just start working again?

It died while driving.

Last time the coil went bad, so I replaced it and went on my way.

This time not so sure. It is just me so it is hard to visually check for spark, but I am getting signal with my volt meter.
Pulled a plug and is dry.

All my gauges work fine, I have fuel pressure at the rail, and fuel pump turns on when I turn the key.
Swapped relays
checked fuses
Ohm checked the crank sensor
checked for voltage at the plug wires and have it when cranking.
Sorta at a loss at this point...

Got an OBDII code reader ? Have you looked inside the distributer cap ?

This is my 4.0 1993 zj.

Yes I did check my cap and rotor.

Sensors maybe? CPS IAT TPS. It's got power? Lights radio?

Like my uncle used to tell me while slapping me on the head...

spark, fuel, air. Make sure you have these three before getting too wrapped around the axle.

I know this post is pretty useless, but I'm not there to slap you on the head to give it the full effect!

Buy an adjustable spark plug tester. Test at 40,000 then at 60,000. Check your cps and crk sensor. It will start without your tps

I am going to check the injectors and make sure I have a pulse this morning. I dont want to buy anything, cause I have it all at my shop, but thats 30 miles away.

So I have some questions.

This is what I know.
I have spark. although it appears a little weak.
I sprayed starting fluid into the intake manifold, and nothing
I do have injector pulse
I hear full pump run, for about a second
I have pressure at the rail, via shrader valve
My plugs when pulled are always dry?
I am at a loss here.

So after much reading on the site, I still have no conclusion.

Since I have the blade style coil, I have to drive pretty far to get one.
The one I have is now one week old.
But when I hooked a new spark plug up to the coil wire, I got a orange fire. From the coil. Seams weak to me.
After much cranking I did get my plugs wet so I am getting fuel.



What would give me a weak spark, if it wasn't the coil? Could my cps cause a weak spark. I believed it would cause a no spark.

Also I am not even getting a sputter. Just a cranking. Sounds good cranking though, has compression.

When it first died, if I cranked it for a second and let off the key, the motor would jump a little bit, not much, but it did kinda turn over by itself for a hot second. Not sure what that means.
