I was looking at upgrading my axles soon, atleast the rear d35 to a 44 I was looking for a direct swap. Is the d44a better than the d44? What years do both of them come with I know the d44 comes in 96-98zjs with a v8 are those axles just a direct swap?
sry I'm kinda new to the axle thing
thanks for the help
Kyle

You cannot get the iron D44 in the ZJ. The D44 is superior in strength to the D44A as well, and they are similar but not the same axle.

the zjs only came w/ either d44a or d35 in the rear.
no d44's were used in the jeeps.
and there is little to none aftermarket support for the d44a axle.
search for it, there's tons of info.

The 44a only comes in Grand Cherokee's (and vipers, and a cpl years in vettes). The center section of the housing is aluminum, and the tubes are steel. Its a strong axle, but you want to skid/truss it if you play on the rocks, etc. It is also a direct swap.
The 44 is completely different, and would require lots of fabrication.

you are wrong. the 44a does have an iron carrier and steel axles but were talking about the center section and axle tubes.
unless somewhere down the line someone swapped an iron 44 in there you have the aluminum dana 44.

Export zj's (zg) had iron 44s. Including the jeep 360 model.
The zj 44a is potentially much stronger than an iron 44. The ring and pinion are close to 60 strength and the shafts are beefier. Once you eliminate tube and housing flex with a truss and the btf diff cover it's weaknesses are eliminated.

do you guys have some pictures of a d44 and a d44a side by side so I can see the difference I thought I saw a pic of this once. Do all v8 96-98 grand cherokees come with a d44a rear? what about the front is it hard to find a hp30 to replace the lp30 that comes stock in mine?

Be careful. I'm pretty sure 2000-2001 XJs had a low pinion dana 30.

Would that be the D44a's larger ring gear, larger pinion gear, or bigger axle shafts that make it weaker then the D44?
The weaknesses of the D44a are the aluminum housing allowing for flex between the two axle tubes causing premature wheel bearing failure and spun tubes. Truss it and those weaknesses go away. Everything else is stronger.

High pinion is stronger. Why? I forget. I think the pinion and ring gear are stronger. Also since the pinion is up higher it raises your driveshaft and gets it away from rocks and such.
