The D44a

Why does everyone seem to hate the D44a? Are there reliably issues? Or did DC just screw up the engineering of it?

I don't hate it...

So please rephrase your OP to read:
"Why does everyone buy Arlo seem to hate the D44a?"

Weak points:
1) Only one locker available for it.
2) Can't use parts designed for other D44's
3) Aluminum housing allows axle to flex & destroy the wheel bearings
4) They are just jealous.

It works but having a selectable locker for it would be nice.

I still don't get why Arlo wants one though

My biggest problem with it is, How can they call it a Dana 44A if nothing is interchangeable with the Iron Dana 44? I think they could have called it Dana 40 or Dana 43 or something to signify that it is different than the standard Dana 44...

Beisdes I want to call up Spider trax and order their custom 9" housing, stick a set of Dana 60 knuckles on there and build one hell of a 9" hybrid (front and rear). Although it probably cant be done or expensive as ****... it still makes me feel better to think about that sort of thing sitting here at my desk all **** day.

Check them out here.http://www.spidertrax.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.961/.f

The 44a is a decent axel. When trussed the fact that the center section is aluminum is pretty much a non-factor. The internals are strong. The 44a can be run locked on 35-37" tires.

Yes the lack of a selectable locker does suck.
