D44a

I just got a reply back from tractech about lockers for the Dana44a under the ZJs. He said that the reason nobody offers a locker for this axle is that it's prone to twisting. He also said that these axles have a hard time staying alive in stock applications. Has anybody had problems with this rear end? If this axle is such a POS why in the hell did Jeep offer it as a heavy duty option? I'm tempted to swap in a D35 out of an I6 JZ and hope I don't destroy it. I don't have $1500-$2000 to spend on a custom rear axle for my daily driven, lightly off-roaded Jeep. It mostly cruises the highway and goes into the back country during deer season. A selectable locker would be nice to have when in the mud getting to the hunting cabin. Will a D35 suvive behind a V8 equipped JZ? Or am I stuck shelling out big bucks to get a custom rear?

You'll be fine with a 35 till u get to 35s or somethin huge like that. Alot of V8 jeeps also came with them.

I posted the same question on that other forum, and I was called a retard for wanting to put a D35 behind a V8. I think I'm gonna try it anyway. I'll just hang on to my 44a in case I destroy the 35. Is there a differance in gear ratios between the 2 axles? Since I'm not going with bigger tires for a while I don't want to regear. Thanks for the input.

Don't waste your time with a D35.

Go for a XJ / MJ D44 or a Ford 8.8.

If your going to get into wheelin you wont reget it.

Is the XJ axle the same width? I thought the ZJ was wider. If they're the same width I might look into it.

I believe the widths are very close....you might need some 5/8" spacers.

FYI...come over to www.nagca.com

Also is the D44 in the rear of an XJ a real 44 or is it a POS like what I already have under my ZJ?
