D30 Vari Loks

Quick question

If the CV boot is torn is the boot "service kit" only the way to go? I am looking at the FSM and it says the CV axle is a one piece non serviceable part? I remembered on my ZJ you could replace the entire passenger side half shaft.

has anyone done this recently? my initial idea was to jack up the front passenger side hight and then replace the half shaft so I can keep away from (easy but)messy diff fluid change and such

thanks,

it's saying you can't rebuild the cv joint yourself. it still has half shafts, hit up your local parts store and get a replacement.

You wont loose any diff fluid pulling the shaft out, if you do you had way to much in it. I just did my boots on the WJ and ZJ I never cracked the hub nut, just the 3 on the backside. The 12 point 13mm bolts. Be sure to use a 12 point. They can be tough to crack, I used a 4 foot pipe on the ratchet for leverage. Back them out 1/8 to 1/4 inch, leave the socket on them and bash them with a BFH to unseat the the assembly. Pull the whole thing out, slide or cut the old boot off and slide the new one on. Make sure you clean everything really well and get the CV well packed with proper grease. Most boots come with grease, buy more. And dont be cheap with the new boots. Buy good ones. It's a messy job you dont want to do again any time soon...but it's easy.
Unless of course the CV is shot, then buy a shaft.

most people don't notice a torn boot till after the cv is totally shot. you have to catch it really early.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Shucks auto has the replacement CV half shafts. In a hurry I ran out to the dealer to get the friction modifier thinking I will have to change the fluid out as well.
Thanks for the suggestions...

When did you last time change the oil? If it's been some long time ago, I think it may be safe idea to do it, in case if anything would get there with axle shaft removal. Unlikely, but possible.

Seems no matter how hard I try to keep the crap out of the diffs, there's always one that gets contaminated. Checked the WJ the other day before a road trip and sure nuff, front was black. Found the vent tube was off the diff. Switched to Amsoil 75-140 synthetic instead of Quakerstate. Half the price, so I'll try it.

When installing the unit wheel bearings always ues plenty of anti-seize on the outer part of the bearing surface. It will save much time next time it has to come apart.
