Cutting out/ engine "jump"

It's happening while driving and then some rough idle while idling and it only happens sometimes. I'm thinking fuel filter??? Any suggestions. Plugs, wires are fresh. I dunno when fuel filter was touched, if ever??? 97 jeep grand cherokee Laredo
