Custom front HP D44 build-up + rear link style modification

Ok.. finally here goes. This will be a slow(ish) build over the winter, starting with gathering parts and getting things prepped.

I am absolutely tired of constantly fixing the HP D30, so it's time for a front axle upgrade.

I bought this from eBay, I should receive it by end of year (it's shipped to me using ship freight due to the high price of air mail):

Dynatrack inner castings:

Axle will be built to stock ZJ width. I will replace the cut down 3" OD x .500" wall tubes with 3" OD x 3/8" wall tube. It will receive a truss over the pumpkin for the drivers' side UCA bracket, but most likely not going to be fully trussed. I don't see a need for one with the huge axle tubes, only turning 33s now, max. 35s in the future on trails.
It's gonna have full DIY CA/ trackbar/ shock brackets and coil buckets. CA brackets will be similar "raised" design as I have on my current HP D30.

I will use Dynatrack beefed-up inner castings (inner C), and my current WJ steering knuckles, brakes and othe rcomponents. Front trackbar will get some work done, but it's gonna be pretty much the same.
I might update my steering linkage from 1.25" OD .250" wall to 1.50" ID x .250" wall. Not sure on that just yet.

For now it's gonna use 30-spline inner and outer chrome-moly u-joint shafts, but they will be upgraded to 30-30 spline RCVs at some point.
Eaton eLocker and 4.56 gears.

I will post on this topic once I start getting the parts and things done. It's gonna take until jan-Feb. before anything really happens, so be patient

This was my HP D30 build last year - the second HP D30

While waiting for the front HP D44 parts to arrive, I've been doing some work changing my rear axle from 4-link + panhard bar to triangulated uppers + slightly angled lowers.

If some of you haven't noticed from my niner build thread, the rear UCA frameside mounts cracked off - like they tend to do on short-arm ZJs that get wheeled fairly often.
I wanted to get better behaviour from the rear suspension, and also raise the axle mounts higher so they don't hang up on rocks all the time.

If you ask me why not double-triangulated long arms? Main reasons are street legality and cost. Laws here in Finland require one to use only factory-built control arms, and the control arms need to be from a vehicle of same or higher gross weight, and with an engine of same or higher power/torque. Kinda limited options there - and the other thing is the high price of getting four factory-built suitable long control arms shipped across the ocean.

So this is basically a WJ rear A-arm + straight(ish) lowers design, with the exception of having two separate uppers and the link mounts being vertical, not horizontal.

Got the rear axle done as far as I can build at the moment. Now it's time for test-fitting and starting the work on the uniframe plating & new brackets
Axle is currently missing shock mounts and swaybar endlink mounts, and it's not painted. I'll do those once the uniframe is done.

Does that look like a beast or what!!!!! Good job!!! If I had a shop or at least 4 walls I would learn from all the builders here and give it a go myself. That is until I remembered how much a 2WD aggrevates the stew out of me.

here is the HP44 I did for my TJ 14 years ago... watching your thread as I might want to change it up a bit and make a better looking cover/arm bracket... but I have had no structural issues since building it, it has been baja'd as fast as it would in prim, done the hammers, moab a couple times and 10 years of daily driving go... rewarded it by buying Ried knuckles a few months ago to get my steering angle better and feel a bit tighter...

I cut to 89 wagoneer length, it made both stock and CrMo inner axles easy to come by..

Good to know! A HP D44 with the heavy-duty tubes certainly is a strong axle, even though it is not a D60. But I don't need that currently, at least not as long as my ZJ is a street-driven daily driver/ weekend wheeling warrior. I just want it to be reasonably light ( ), and reliable. D30 certainly is not reliable

yeah, I went through a couple D30's... here is a video of one of them getting 7 degrees of camber and shattering the ARB spider gear shaft https://www.facebook.com/michael.cot...5576861006256/

anyway, I thought you might like the ability to do an off-the shelf inner shaft length with the waggy axle dimensions

I'm on my third HP D30 It doesn't really take much to brake these things.. this probably was partially due to older abuse happening, but then again I have cromo- shafts front & back.

Start at around 2:00 minutes:

Thanks, but this one needs ABS brakes due to road legality requirements here in Finland. I'm trying to save a bit on the costs as well, so I'm keeping the WJ knuckles, brakes & steering (custom 1.25" DOM steering links), but I will upgrade to the beefier Dynatrac inner C's.
My axle is going to have XJ/ZJ/TJ stock-length inner 30-spline cromo-shafts

..yes, this won't be the ultimate HP D44 regarding strength, but this is what I gotta go with. I certainly would've loved real hubs and flat-top knuckles, but it's a no-go at this point.
