Crate Motor vs Rebuid vs Ride Off into Sunset

I'm thinking about the above options. Still runs good. Mileage is what you would expect and everything works. You can see the condition from my pic. No dents. No accidents and never abused. Original owner with 259k Limited with UC susp and tow package and maintenance regular. All replacement parts have been mopar OEM. No mods.

Figure out what you want it to do and start a rebuild while your current motor still runs. By the time it dies you'll be ready for a swap.

OK the fun is over
try again

Sorry- Mess over top of reply. Crate motor is 2000. Install? Rebuild would be expensive. I don't do this myself

Do you have the money to spend ? If you do, I'd get a 5.9 crate motor... 350-370 hp sounds mighty fine to me.. :) Altho you have a 5.2 with the 44re.. that crate motor would most likely eat your transmission alive.. Soooo If you cant afford a new motor and tranny plus cost to install.. Then I'd just drive off into the sunset if your Jeeps engine still runs really good

I would leave it alone. See how many miles you can get on the engine.

Have debated this myself being at 217000, and have yet to make a decision. I would like to do the rebuild and have ready option but space and the lack of a good machine shop in my area weighs heavy. The crate motor option has worries also in that you really don't know for sure just what was really done to it.

I agree with zj97ltd..why not source out a junk yard motor and start a rebuild process on it while you continue to use your current motor till it goes. This way you get to see just how many miles youll get but have the peace of mind knowing you have a back up fresh and ready to go.

Have a compression and leak down test done. If everything points towards a healthy engine have a new cam put in with headers and a full exhaust.

Maybe get a JY 44RE and get it rebuilt with some HD internals and pick up a low mileage 5.9 and drop it in. This is the route I'm considering for mine.

The time now is 04:25 AM.
