coolant sensor

New owner of 94 ZJ. While driving home "coolant sensor bad" came on. Read Haynes on replacing sensor but dont have electronic testing (voltmeter/ohmmeter) next stop at CARQUEST. First ?, OK to drive as coolant level OK or does sensor need replaced ASAP to contol resistance? Second, can somebody explain how to measure/identify diagnostic trouble codes? Sorry for being so wordy. HELP PLEASE! FYI...did SEARCH w/no help
