Cooking bacon in my rear dif?

It's been about a week since I drove my GC (I've been driving my wrangler instead). Last night I ran the GC up to the gas station to fill up and when I got back home, shut off the engine I heard a very noticeable sizzling and crackling sound coming from the rear. Crawled underneath and it sounded like there's bacon frying in my rear dif... sort of crackling and popping like oil in a frying pan.

Dif fluids were changed about 3 months ago and I haven't heard any such noises before last night and no visual fluid leak on the garage floor or around the dif.

Any suggestions on what this could be? It's definitely not your ordinary cooling down noise (like the radiator makes sometimes).

pop off the fill hole cover (after it has cooled) and make sure you have enough fluid in there and see if it is burned. Drive it through water recently? Possibly water in the diff?

Are you sure it was the diff? Water + hot rotors = sizzle sizzle.

Was there alot of heat emanating from the diff housing? If it causing that kind of response in the oil then the housing my be discolored as well. If this is the case then there is a bearing that is toast!

Would have checked the level this am but didn't have time. So I just drove the wrangler in to work. Plan to check it this evening. I didn't run in any water, but it was cold out a few nights this weak if temp may have anything to do with it - since it's been sitting all week.

I don't change my own dif fluid becuase it's not that expensive to have done and the one time I did it I made a god awful mess. But I suspect that may be the problem. But that was 3 months ago, so I'm not sure. Thx

I would also make sure it have the correct fluid. If you have a vari-loc or trac-loc it takes a spacific fliud recipe.
