Cold air intake on 4.0 WJ

I am thinking about putting a cold air intake system on my WJ. I know people have done it with the 4.7s but I haven't been able to find anyone who did it with a 4.0. Did anybody do this to their 4.0?

Yes I have. You wont see any noticeable power or gas mileage gains, but it sounds cool. I just pieced mine together with tubing from autozone and a Spectre filter. I will be ordering an amsoil filter as soon as I have the extra cash.

I modified my airbox (cut away parts of the lower air box) and put in a K&N air filter... Same effect without the high price tag!

Good luck!

Just so you know its not going to be cold air unless you have a way of blocking off engine heat. I dont think they really help at all, only good for sound. If you cant block the engine heat it may be worse for power, modify the stock airbox like JonM81 did so it will pull cold air in from the grill.

My k&n made a difference. No its not gonna be huge but it did help with losing steam on long highway hills. And even if it didnt it was worth the sound. Its like sex in a box!

I have read that it does make a difference and it doesn't. Personally I think it would sound sweet but that is not my reason for wanting to do it. I guess I am mainly wondering if it helps with mpg and if there is an increase in power. If I end up doing it I am probably not going to buy one because it would be more money than I can afford right now so I would probably buy the tubing and stuff to do it myself. I am just hesitant because I don't want to do all that work and not gain anything other than it sounding better. So, if anyone has pics of what they did please share.

Here ya go! It looks much better cleaned up... I planned on screening it somehow, but never got around to it. Never had any problems. I only oil the bottom side of the filter to avoid ingesting the oil in the TB.

Like I said, I only cut away the bottom side mostly in the front to allow mostly cool air in. Easy 15min job and 35-45 bux for the filter...

Good Luck!

^ looks like normal carbon build up in the TB. K&N filters suck though.

@JonM81. That design is worse than stock. The engine can more easily suck in air, but it's all coming from the engine compartment which will be very hot.

may be but it was sticky not a dust it didn't wipe off easy had to use a tooth brush.

x2 you allowed it to suck air from the Headers now

gosh I don't have any pics of mine. It's just a couple of those chrome tubes and a spectre filter on the end from Autozone. I wish I would have the top to the filter housing so I could make it draw are from the front, but all mine does is sound cool. I need to fab a cover for it so it can pull from the fender well or grill sometime. If your lookign for mileage, you may try regear....265's is a bit tire also depending on what rating you got adds weight. I remeber on my TJ a 245/75/16 in E rating weighed around 54 lbs for a goodyear MTR and a light truck tire like replaced was a the kumho somethings that were c rated and only weighed 36lbs per tire. I saw an improvement there!
