Clicking on hard accel...

I have a 99 Limited with the 4.7 and full time AWD transfer case. (Hi/N/Low selector)

I'm getting some "clicking" noises under hard acceleration, even at highway speeds. It's a pretty regular "tick... tick.... tick...", almost a snapping sound really, at WOT. It isn't very loud but audible.

I've also had some "BANG" noises under hard acceleration from a dead stop; one time on a wet road I accelerated moderately hard from a light. Rear end broke loose, fishtailed slightly like a 2WD vehicle would, "BANG" noise a second later, then the truck hooked up and went straight as I would expect an AWD vehicle to do. My SOTP impression was the transfer case allowed wheel spin, then violently engaged the front driveshaft.

All signs are pointing towards the transfer case. I do intend to change the fluid soon regardless but could that be the only problem? I've seen fluid changes make dramatic differences in GM AWD cases before and cause similar problem. Hoping it's the same for Chrysler units but I'm open to suggestion!

U-joints do look OK.
